Degreaser Explained: Types, Uses, Surfaces, Safety and How to Choose the Right Product
Short answer: A degreaser is a cleaner formulated specifically to break down and lift grease, oil and fat soils that ordinary multipurpose cleaners leave behind. Selection depends on the surface, the grease type and the environment.

What a degreaser is and how it works
Degreasers emulsify oils so they rinse or wipe away with water. Alkaline degreasers lift animal, vegetable and petroleum fats and oils; solvent-based products dissolve heavy grease and tar; water-based formulations balance power with low odour and easy rinsing; enzymatic degreasers digest grease residues over time, suiting drains and food areas.
Degreaser vs multipurpose cleaner
Multipurpose cleaners handle everyday dirt, light grease and fingerprints. A degreaser is engineered for heavy grease: stovetops, extractor filters, ovens, engines, workshop floors, tools and machinery. Where a multipurpose cleaner smears grease around, a degreaser lifts it off.
Kitchen degreasing
Apply with a cloth or spray, allow brief contact time, agitate, wipe, then rinse food-contact surfaces thoroughly with clean water. Ventilate. We publish no dilution table for our degreaser because no official dilution data has been supplied – follow the product label.
Engine and workshop degreasing
Agitate (brush) and rinse off; work away from stormwater drains because oily runoff is a pollution hazard. Industrial hand grit soap removes oil from hands with a light abrasive.
Surface limitations
Strong alkalis can dull or strip waxed, painted or anodised finishes and may harm some aluminium, glass and natural stone. Test a hidden area first. Never mix degreasers with bleach or other chemicals.
Safety and PPE
Gloves and eye protection for concentrated/heavy-duty products; ventilation; keep from children; store sealed. Treat all degreasers as potentially irritating until the SDS confirms handling requirements.
Environmental and disposal
Wipe up excess grease before wet cleaning; dispose of residues per local requirements; never pour oily degreaser solution into storm drains.

Frequently asked questions
Q: Can I use degreaser on natural stone or aluminium?
Only if the label explicitly permits it. Alkaline degreasers can etch stone and discolour aluminium. Test a hidden area first.
Q: Do I need to dilute degreaser?
Follow the label. Our supplier has provided no official dilution table, so we publish none.
Q: What is the difference between a degreaser and an oven cleaner?
Oven cleaners are a heavy-duty degreaser class, often more alkaline, for baked-on fat. Our combined engine & oven cleaner is pending formulation details.
