Cleaning, Sanitising and Disinfecting: What the Terms Actually Mean

Short answer: Cleaning removes dirt and many germs physically; sanitising reduces germ numbers on food-contact surfaces; disinfecting kills a broad range of pathogens on hard surfaces using a verified product at its label contact time.

The three terms

Cleaning uses detergent and friction to remove soil and many germs. Sanitising (mainly food-contact surfaces) reduces bacteria to safe public-health levels. Disinfecting uses antimicrobial chemistry to kill germs on hard, non-porous surfaces – at the label dilution and contact time, and for the organisms its registration covers.

Bleach: powerful but demanding

Liquid bleach is a strong oxidising disinfectant when used exactly per label directions. Never mix with acids or ammonia. It can damage fabrics and many surfaces, needs ventilation, and has limited shelf life once opened. Thick variants cling for bowls and vertical surfaces.

Alcohol sanitiser

70% alcohol hand sanitiser is for hand hygiene when soap and water are unavailable; it is not a general surface disinfectant. Keep away from flames; store capped. Our line is pending safety/regulatory review.

Pine disinfectants

Pine-scented disinfectant liquids clean and deodorise hard surfaces; true disinfection claims depend on the specific product's registration and label directions. We publish no pathogen-kill percentages without substantiated label evidence.

Antibacterial hand soap

Supports routine handwashing in kitchens, bathrooms and commercial facilities. Technique and wash duration matter as much as the soap.

Contact time matters

A disinfectant works only at its stated contact time – the surface must stay wet for the label duration. Spray-and-immediately-wipe achieves little. We state contact times only where confirmed on the label.

Safe storage and PPE

Store sealed, labelled, away from children and heat. Gloves for concentrated products; ventilation where the label requires. First-aid information must come from the current SDS.

Products in our store

Liquid bleach; thick bleach (approved lines). Pine disinfectant liquid, black dip disinfectant, 70% alcohol sanitiser and antibacterial hand soap under safety/regulatory review.

Frequently asked questions

Q: Is cleaning the same as disinfecting?

No. Cleaning removes dirt and many germs; disinfecting kills a broad range of germs on hard surfaces using a verified product at label contact time.

Q: Do your disinfectants kill 99.9% of germs?

We publish no pathogen-kill percentages until confirmed by product labelling/registration documentation.

Q: Can I use hand sanitiser to clean surfaces?

No. Hand sanitiser is formulated and intended for skin, not surfaces.
